Info Post
Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...

...Here's a fabulous story my dad recently came across: for the past five decades it's been believed that no recording existed of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series between the Pirates and the Yankees, which is considered one of the greatest games in baseball history. A complete recording was recently found in mint condition...in Bing Crosby's wine cellar!

...For your added reading pleasure, here's another fun story I found about Bing and his beloved Pirates.

...As I told Jacqueline in a comment, her reviews at Another Old Movie Blog always make me so anxious to see the films she describes! Here's her post on THAT FORSYTE WOMAN (1949), which has a great cast including Greer Garson, Errol Flynn, Walter Pidgeon, Janet Leigh, and Robert Young.

...Has anyone looked at the 2007 book DRESSED: A CENTURY OF HOLLYWOOD COSTUME DESIGN by Deborah N. Landis? According to TCM, the author is a costume designer who is the wife of director John Landis.

...Mark of WHERE DANGER LIVES reviewed HER KIND OF MAN (1946), the fascinating -- and also exasperating -- film which I recently reviewed as well. Mark confirms my suspicion that Janis Paige's singing was dubbed.

...Daniel Henninger has written a terrific, thought-provoking piece, "Capitalism Saved the Miners." That, and a lot of help from the Almighty. :) Read it for a very interesting take on an amazing story.

...Glenn Erickson reviewed the TCM release of SUNDOWN (1941). I recorded this on TCM last summer and look forward to catching up with it. The cast includes Gene Tierney, Bruce Cabot, George Sanders, Harry Carey Sr., Joseph Calleia, Reginald Gardiner, and Cedric Hardwicke. That's some cast!

...More Erickson DVD reviews: THE LOCKET (1946) and THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE (1956), also known as PURSUIT OF THE GRAF SPEE. I loved THE LOCKET last year.

...Raquelle reviews the new book ERROL AND OLIVIA: EGO AND OBSESSION IN GOLDEN ERA HOLLYWOOD at OUT OF THE PAST. Raquelle's balanced review listed her likes and also pointed out a few spots where she took issue with the author's presentation. Overall the book sounds worth checking out.

...There's lots of info in this MiceAge column on Cars Land, currently under construction at Disney's California Adventure.

...Noir and Chick Flicks honored Linda Darnell with a photo tribute on her birthday yesterday, October 16th.

...Leonard Maltin shares thoughts on the new Columbia Classics DVD-R program.

...Attention Southern Californians: It's been announced that Charlton Heston's widow, Lydia, will appear at the screening of a restored print of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) at the Egyptian Theatre tomorrow evening, October 18th. The event celebrates the Egyptian Theatre's 88th anniversary.

Have a great week!
